Handel and his environment

George Frideric Handel is the prototype of the European in the music of the late Baroque. Raised in the Protestant cantorial milieu of Halle, his first opera experiences at the Hamburg opera house on the Gänsemarkt, a favorite of high Catholic dignitaries in Rome and close contact with the exponent of the Italian style Arcangelo Corelli, an opera composer in the fiercely competitive music market of the world metropolis of London, yet always closely linked to Italy, Germany and France, and finally celebrated in England as a musical national hero, he was the absolute global player of the music scene of the Western world.

His “environment” can hardly be put into words, he was at least well acquainted with the top singers, instrumentalists and composers of his time, partly envied and enmity, partly close friends, mostly highly respected, admired, revered.

After his death, the enthusiasm for his music never waned; Mozart and Beethoven were his fans. Even today, his heartbreaking arias are international hits that are impossible to resist.

So the repertoire for the 2023 master classes is hard to keep track of. Especially in the field of opera, oratorio and cantata, Handel’s oeuvre is inexhaustible. A virtuoso clavier player, Handel also left behind significant harpsichord and organ music. His sonatas for recorder, violin, traverso and oboe are rather occasional works, but nevertheless very expressive and demanding, also in the continuo parts. The music of Handel’s colleagues from Italy, Germany and France round out his instrumental works. Corelli, Geminiani, Sammartini, Bach, Pisendel and Blavet are representative of many. Throughout his life, Handel had a special connection with Telemann, to whom he was a subscriber and whom he honored by musical quotations, the so-called “borrowing”.

At the master classes of Vielklang 2023, therefore, there is an infinite number of sounds to be made for musicians of most baroque instrumental subjects and especially for singers. Dancers, too, will find ample terrain in Handel’s work.
